North Karelia: Tourism in a nutshell
22,100 registered bed nights (February)
In February 2021, 22,100 bed nights were recorded in North Karelia (-38.6 %), of which 21,500 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 570 nights by foreigners. Domestic bed nights decreased 33 percent and foreign bed nights decreased 86 percent. In total, bed nights decreased 39 percent from last year's February.
Most foreign bed nights were recorded for travelers from Netherlands (122 nights).
16,300 nights (-38.4 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 5,800 nights (-39.1 %) by business visitors.
Between January and February, 36,300 bed nights (-31.3 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 1,100 (-89.4 %) for foreigners in North Karelia, in total 37,500 (-41.0 %) nights.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

11,600 tourists arrived to accommodation (February)
Arrivals to registered accommodation decreased 43 percent compared to earlier year. Of all arrivals, 97.4 percent were domestic, and 2.6 percent were from foreign countries.
During February, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in North Karelia on average 1.9 nights (+0.17) and foreigners 1.9 nights (-0.22).
65 air travelers (Joensuu)
The airport received a total of 65 passengers, which means air passenger arrivals decreased 97 percent.
Of local passengers, 9.2 % arrived from abroad, thus the share of domestic passengers was 90.8 %.
In addition, there were 49 passengers departing the airport (-97.6 %), therefore the total number of trips via the airport was 114 (-97.5 %).

22,700 Russian travelers via eastern border (February)
A total of 22,700 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.

Russian visa applications decreased 97 percent
There was a total of 940 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 38.0 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Foreign visitors and their consumption (February)
The number of foreign visitors in February was 4,000 (-83.9 %). Out of them 2,700 were on a daytrip and 1,300 stayed at least for one night.
The cumulative number of foreign visitors between January and February was 6,200 (-91.6 %).
Total consumption of these visitors in North Karelia in February was 338,000 euro (85 per visitor). Overnight visitors spent 205,000 euro and day visitors 133,000 euro. Between January and February the consumption was 522,000 euro.

Accommodation sales 1.9 million euro (February)
Total accommodation sales in February were 1.9 million euro (-1.1 million). The share of Airbnb and Vrbo was 31.7 percent. Therefore, registered accommodation sales were 1.3 million euro (-768,000) and non-registered sales 594,000 euro (-374,000).
Total January-February sales were 3.3 million euro and they decreased 2.5 million euro from the previous year.
