63,300 bed nights in paid accommodation (May)
Total of 63,300 bed nights (+27.3 %) were recorded in paid accommodation in North Karelia in May 2022. This figure includes bed nights at registered establishments as well as at AirBnB and Vrbo. The share of registered bed nights was 60 % and non-registered 40 %.
Between January and May, the number of paid bed nights was 244,000 (+13.7 %). Share of registered was 58 % and non-registered 42 %.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded. Non-registered bed nights statistics include bed nights from AirBnB and Vrbo.
Registered bed nights increased 45 percent (May)
In May 2022, 37,800 registered bed nights were recorded in North Karelia (+44.7 %), of which 34,700 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 3,100 nights by foreigners. Registered domestic bed nights increased 35 percent and registered foreign bed nights increased 600 percent. In total, registered bed nights increased 45 percent from last year's May.
21,500 nights (+14.4 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 16,300 nights (+122.8 %) by business visitors.
Between January and May, 132,000 registered bed nights (+28.7 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 10,600 (+347.9 %) for foreigners in North Karelia, in total 142,000 (+35.9 %) registered nights.

20,900 tourists arrived to registered accommodation (May)
Arrivals to registered accommodation increased 41 percent compared to earlier year. Of all registered arrivals, 94.4 percent were domestic, and 5.6 percent were from foreign countries.
During May, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in North Karelia on average 1.8 nights (0.0) and foreigners 2.6 nights (+0.8).
1,300 air travelers (May, Joensuu)
The airport received a total of 1,300 passengers, which means air passenger arrivals increased 570 percent.
Of local passengers, 11.4 % arrived from abroad, thus the share of domestic passengers was 88.6 %.
In addition, there were 1,500 passengers departing the airport (+738.3 %), therefore the total number of trips via the airport was 2,700 (+648.9 %).

Trips by Russian travelers over the eastern border increased 36 percent (May)
A total of 32,800 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.
The share of southeastern border stations was 76.2 percent.

Russian visa applications increased 920 percent (April)
There was a total of 11,200 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 84.0 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Accommodation sales 3.5 million euro (May)
Total accommodation sales in May were 3.5 million euro (+1.2 million). The share of Airbnb and Vrbo was 23.5 percent. Therefore, registered accommodation sales were 2.7 million euro (+1.2 million) and non-registered sales 818,000 euro (+33,400).
Total January-May sales were 12.8 million euro and they increased 3.5 million euro from the previous year.
