Joensuu Region: Tourism in a nutshell
22,200 registered bed nights
In March 2019, 22,200 bed nights were recorded in Joensuu Region (-9.3 %), of which 18,100 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 4,100 nights by foreigners. Domestic bed nights increased one percent and foreign bed nights decreased 37 percent. In total, bed nights decreased nine percent from last year's March.
Most foreign bed nights were recorded for travelers from Russia (1,000 nights).
12,800 nights (-16.6 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 9,400 nights (+2.8 %) by business visitors.
Between January and March, 47,900 bed nights (+2.5 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 10,400 (-22.3 %) for foreigners in Joensuu Region, in total 58,300 (-3.0 %) nights.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

Market share 1.2 percent
Total of 1.9 million bed nights (-2.3 %) were recorded in the whole country, of which 1.3 million nights (-2.6 %) were spent by domestic visitors and 566,000 nights (-1.4 %) by foreigners.
The market share of Joensuu Region out of total bed nights was 1.2 % (-0.1 percentage points), out of domestic bed nights 1.4 % and foreign bed nights 0.7 %.
12,900 tourists arrived to accommodation
Arrivals to registered accommodation increased three percent compared to earlier year. Of all arrivals, 85.6 percent were domestic, and 14.4 percent were from foreign countries.
During March, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in Joensuu Region on average 1.6 nights (-0.09) and foreigners 2.2 nights (-0.83).

Trips by Russian travelers over the eastern border increased seven percent
A total of 292,000 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.
The share of southeastern border stations was 81.9 percent.

Russian visa applications increased 32 percent
There was a total of 65,700 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 84.2 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Accommodation sales 1.4 million euro
Registered accommodation sales in March were 1.4 million euro (-206,000).
Registered January-March sales were 3.8 million euro and they decreased 99,800 euro from the previous year.
