Joensuu: Tourism in a nutshell
16,900 registered bed nights
In March 2019, 16,900 bed nights were recorded in Joensuu (-7.3 %), of which 13,300 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 3,600 nights by foreigners. Domestic bed nights increased four percent and foreign bed nights decreased 35 percent. In total, bed nights decreased seven percent from last year's March.
Most foreign bed nights were recorded for travelers from Russia (910 nights).
8,100 nights (-18.1 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 8,700 nights (+5.8 %) by business visitors.
Between January and March, 36,500 bed nights (+3.1 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 8,700 (-21.8 %) for foreigners in Joensuu, in total 45,200 (-2.9 %) nights.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

Total of 1.9 million bed nights (-2.3 %) were recorded in the whole country, of which 1.3 million nights (-2.6 %) were spent by domestic visitors and 566,000 nights (-1.4 %) by foreigners.
The market share of Joensuu out of total bed nights was 0.9 % (-0.0 percentage points), out of domestic bed nights 1.0 % and foreign bed nights 0.6 %.
10,800 tourists arrived to accommodation
Arrivals to registered accommodation increased five percent compared to earlier year. Of all arrivals, 85.3 percent were domestic, and 14.7 percent were from foreign countries.
During March, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in Joensuu on average 1.4 nights (-0.06) and foreigners 2.2 nights (-0.74).
570 international congress guests in 2018
The number of international congress quests increased 155 percent from the previous year.
There was a total of 10 congresses organized (+7.0) in 2018.
5,600 air travelers
The airport received a total of 5,600 passengers, which means air passenger arrivals decreased one percent.
Of local passengers, 6.0 % arrived from abroad, thus the share of domestic passengers was 94.0 %.
In addition, there were 5,600 passengers departing the airport (-2.9 %), therefore the total number of trips via the airport was 11,200.

Trips by Russian travelers over the eastern border increased seven percent
A total of 292,000 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.
The share of southeastern border stations was 81.9 percent.

Russian visa applications increased 32 percent
There was a total of 65,700 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 84.2 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Accommodation sales 1.3 million euro
Total accommodation sales in March were 1.3 million euro (-228,000). The share of Airbnb and HomeAway was 5.3 percent. Therefore, registered accommodation sales were 1.2 million euro (-186,000) and Airbnb and HomeAway sales 64,300 euro (-42,100).
Total January-March sales were 3.4 million euro and they decreased 193,000 euro from the previous year.
