Joensuu: Tourism in a nutshell
Registered bed nights increased nine percent
In August 2019, 24,400 bed nights were recorded in Joensuu (+8.7 %), of which 19,100 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 5,300 nights by foreigners. Domestic bed nights increased one percent and foreign bed nights increased 49 percent. In total, bed nights increased nine percent from last year's August.
Most foreign bed nights were recorded for travelers from China (1,600 nights).
15,000 nights (+23.6 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 9,500 nights (-8.8 %) by business visitors.
Between January and August, 126,000 bed nights (+3.8 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 23,000 (-11.5 %) for foreigners in Joensuu, in total 149,000 (+1.1 %) nights.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

15,100 tourists arrived to accommodation
Arrivals to registered accommodation increased two percent compared to earlier year. Of all arrivals, 85.9 percent were domestic, and 14.1 percent were from foreign countries.
During August, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in Joensuu on average 1.5 nights (+0.01) and foreigners 2.5 nights (+0.59).
570 international congress guests in 2018
The number of international congress quests increased 155 percent from the previous year.
There was a total of 10.0 congresses organized (+7.0) in 2018.
4,100 air travelers
The airport received a total of 4,100 passengers, which means air passenger arrivals decreased eight percent.
Of local passengers, 0.2 % arrived from abroad, thus the share of domestic passengers was 99.8 %.
In addition, there were 4,600 passengers departing the airport (-3.9 %), therefore the total number of trips via the airport was 8,700 (-5.7 %).

Trips by Russian travelers over the eastern border increased 13 percent
A total of 348,000 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.
The share of southeastern border stations was 92.3 percent.

Russian visa applications increased 45 percent
There was a total of 90,700 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 84.3 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Accommodation sales 1.5 million euro
Registered accommodation sales in August were 1.5 million euro (+50,000).
Registered January-August sales were 9.8 million euro and they increased 22,900 euro from the previous year.
