Kainuu: Tourism in a nutshell

Registered bed nights increased eight percent
In September 2021, 79,400 registered bed nights were recorded in Kainuu (+8.2 %), of which 76,000 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 3,400 nights by foreigners. Registered domestic bed nights increased six percent and registered foreign bed nights increased 106 percent. In total, registered bed nights increased eight percent from last year's September.
Most foreign registered bed nights were recorded for travelers from Germany (670 nights).
68,800 nights (+9.8 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 10,600 nights (-0.7 %) by business visitors.
Between January and September, 723,000 registered bed nights (+15.8 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 25,500 (-31.0 %) for foreigners in Kainuu, in total 748,000 (+13.1 %) registered nights.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

27,100 tourists arrived to registered accommodation
Arrivals to registered accommodation increased three percent compared to earlier year. Of all registered arrivals, 96.8 percent were domestic, and 3.2 percent were from foreign countries.
During September, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in Kainuu on average 2.9 nights (+0.14) and foreigners 3.9 nights (-1.2).
1,200 air travelers (Kajaani)
The airport received a total of 1,200 passengers.
Of local passengers, 0.4 % arrived from abroad, thus the share of domestic passengers was 99.6 %.
In addition, there were 1,200 passengers departing the airport, therefore the total number of trips via the airport was 2,400.

Trips by Russian travelers over the eastern border increased 40 percent
A total of 33,400 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.

Russian visa applications increased 270 percent
There was a total of 2,200 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 52.3 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Accommodation sales 3.8 million euro
Registered accommodation sales in September were 3.8 million euro (+389,000).
Registered January-September sales were 32.4 million euro and they increased 4.7 million euro from the previous year.
