Kuopio: Tourism in a nutshell
Registered bed nights increased two percent (February)
In February 2020, 51,900 bed nights were recorded in Kuopio (+1.8 %), of which 47,400 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 4,400 nights by foreigners. Domestic bed nights increased two percent and foreign bed nights decreased three percent. In total, bed nights increased two percent from last year's February.
Most foreign bed nights were recorded for travelers from Russia (1,600 nights).
35,800 nights (+2.9 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 16,100 nights (-0.4 %) by business visitors.
Between January and February, 78,800 bed nights (+3.7 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 13,200 (-3.3 %) for foreigners in Kuopio, in total 92,000 (+2.6 %) nights.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

Market share 2.8 percent (February)
Total of 1.8 million bed nights (+7.2 %) were recorded in the whole country, of which 1.2 million nights (+10.1 %) were spent by domestic visitors and 613,000 nights (+1.9 %) by foreigners.
The market share of Kuopio out of total bed nights was 2.8 % (-0.1 percentage points), out of domestic bed nights 3.8 % and foreign bed nights 0.7 %.

25,800 tourists arrived to accommodation (February)
Arrivals to registered accommodation decreased eight percent compared to earlier year. Of all arrivals, 93.7 percent were domestic, and 6.3 percent were from foreign countries.
During February, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in Kuopio on average 2.0 nights (+0.18) and foreigners 2.8 nights (+0.37).
2,100 international congress guests in 2019
The number of international congress quests increased six percent from the previous year.
There was a total of 35 congresses organized (+2.0) in 2019.
4,600 air travelers
The airport received a total of 4,600 passengers, which means air passenger arrivals decreased 58 percent.
Of local passengers, 13.7 % arrived from abroad, thus the share of domestic passengers was 86.3 %.
In addition, there were 3,700 passengers departing the airport (-66.0 %), therefore the total number of trips via the airport was 8,400.

Trips by Russian travelers over the eastern border increased 24 percent (February)
A total of 255,000 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.

Russian visa applications increased 29 percent (February)
There was a total of 51,600 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 83.4 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Accommodation sales 3.7 million euro (February)
Total accommodation sales in February were 3.7 million euro (+480,000). The share of Airbnb and HomeAway was 24.1 percent. Therefore, registered accommodation sales were 3.0 million euro (+55,700) and Airbnb and HomeAway sales 718,000 euro (+425,000).
Total January-February sales were 6.9 million euro and they increased 943,000 euro from the previous year.
