Maarianhamina: Tourism in a nutshell
Registered accommodation. All changes are relative to the same period a year ago.
Registered bed nights increased 147 percent
In December 2021, 5,000 registered bed nights were recorded in Maarianhamina (+147.3 %), of which 3,500 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 1,500 nights by foreigners. Registered domestic bed nights increased 152 percent and registered foreign bed nights increased 137 percent. In total, registered bed nights increased 147 percent from last year's December.
Most foreign registered bed nights were recorded for travelers from Sweden (1,400 nights).
3,800 nights (+295.3 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 1,200 nights (+14.5 %) by business visitors.
Between January and December, 120,000 registered bed nights (+69.8 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 28,100 (+119.7 %) for foreigners in Maarianhamina, in total 148,000 (+77.5 %) registered nights.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

2,900 tourists arrived to registered accommodation
Arrivals to registered accommodation increased 230 percent compared to earlier year. Of all registered arrivals, 67.8 percent were domestic, and 32.2 percent were from foreign countries.
During December, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in Maarianhamina on average 1.8 nights (-0.17) and foreigners 1.7 nights (-2.2).

890 air travelers
The airport received a total of 890 passengers, which means air passenger arrivals increased 59 percent.
Of local passengers, 26.0 % arrived from abroad, thus the share of domestic passengers was 74.0 %.
In addition, there were 860 passengers departing the airport (+78.6 %), therefore the total number of trips via the airport was 1,800 (+68.1 %).

There were 36,400 arriving passengers by ferries. In total, the arrivals to port increased 340 percent. The number of departing passengers was 35,400 (+445.9 %). Most arrivals were from Sweden (35,300 arrivals).
