Mikkeli Region: Tourism in a nutshell
35,800 registered bed nights
In August 2019, 35,800 bed nights were recorded in Mikkeli Region (-8.2 %), of which 26,200 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 9,600 nights by foreigners. Domestic bed nights decreased six percent and foreign bed nights decreased 14 percent. In total, bed nights decreased eight percent from last year's August.
Most foreign bed nights were recorded for travelers from Russia (3,900 nights).
27,700 nights (-5.8 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 8,100 nights (-15.3 %) by business visitors.
Between January and August, 161,000 bed nights (+1.0 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 45,400 (-2.3 %) for foreigners in Mikkeli Region, in total 207,000 (+0.2 %) nights.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

19,100 tourists arrived to accommodation
Arrivals to registered accommodation decreased one percent compared to earlier year. Of all arrivals, 81.2 percent were domestic, and 18.8 percent were from foreign countries.
During August, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in Mikkeli Region on average 1.7 nights (-0.09) and foreigners 2.7 nights (-0.38).

Trips by Russian travelers over the eastern border increased 13 percent
A total of 348,000 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.
The share of southeastern border stations was 92.3 percent.

Russian visa applications increased 45 percent
There was a total of 90,700 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 84.3 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Accommodation sales 1.5 million euro
Registered accommodation sales in August were 1.5 million euro (-21,100).
Registered January-August sales were 9.1 million euro and they increased 496,000 euro from the previous year.
