North Karelia: Tourism in a nutshell
Registered accommodation. All changes are relative to the same period a year ago.
Registered bed nights increased 41 percent (March)
In March 2022, 34,400 registered bed nights were recorded in North Karelia (+41.4 %), of which 30,700 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 3,700 nights by foreigners. Registered domestic bed nights increased 28 percent and registered foreign bed nights increased 820 percent. In total, registered bed nights increased 41 percent from last year's March.
Most foreign registered bed nights were recorded for travelers from Germany (680 nights).
23,100 nights (+17.7 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 11,300 nights (+139.8 %) by business visitors.
Between January and March, 69,900 registered bed nights (+13.9 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 6,200 (+308.0 %) for foreigners in North Karelia, in total 76,100 (+21.1 %) registered nights.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

17,500 tourists arrived to registered accommodation (March)
Arrivals to registered accommodation increased 51 percent compared to earlier year. Of all registered arrivals, 94.2 percent were domestic, and 5.8 percent were from foreign countries.
During March, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in North Karelia on average 1.9 nights (-0.22) and foreigners 3.6 nights (+0.09).
770 air travelers (Joensuu)
The airport received a total of 770 passengers, which means air passenger arrivals increased 1,200 percent.
Of local passengers, 0.5 % arrived from abroad, thus the share of domestic passengers was 99.5 %.
In addition, there were 780 passengers departing the airport (+1,709.3 %), therefore the total number of trips via the airport was 1,500 (+1,432.7 %).

Trips by Russian travelers over the eastern border increased 19 percent
A total of 31,300 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.
The share of southeastern border stations was 75.5 percent.

There was a total of 7,500 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 82.4 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
