65,500 registered bed nights

In August 2023, 65,500 registered bed nights were recorded in North Karelia (+0.5 %), of which 58,100 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 7,400 nights by foreigners. Registered domestic bed nights decreased three percent and registered foreign bed nights increased 39 percent. In total, registered bed nights increased less than one percent from last year's August.

49,900 nights (-2.6 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 15,600 nights (+11.8 %) by business visitors.

Between January and August, 333,000 registered bed nights (+0.3 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 29,300 (+21.5 %) for foreigners in North Karelia, in total 363,000 (+1.8 %) registered nights.

Market share 2.8 percent

Total of 2.3 million registered bed nights (-0.4 %) were recorded in the whole country, of which 1.7 million nights (-2.9 %) were spent by domestic visitors and 604,000 nights (+7.5 %) by foreigners.

The market share of North Karelia out of total registered bed nights was 2.8 % (0.0 percentage points), out of domestic bed nights 3.4 % and foreign bed nights 1.2 %.

36,900 tourists arrived to registered accommodation

Arrivals to registered accommodation increased six percent compared to earlier year. Of all registered arrivals, 91.9 percent were domestic, and 8.1 percent were from foreign countries.

During August, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in North Karelia on average 1.7 nights (-0.14) and foreigners 2.5 nights (+0.24).

1,500 air travelers (Joensuu)

The airport received a total of 1,500 passengers, which means air passenger arrivals increased 700 percent.

Of local passengers, 0.7 % arrived from abroad, thus the share of domestic passengers was 99.3 %.

In addition, there were 1,500 passengers departing the airport (+644.2 %), therefore the total number of trips via the airport was 2,900 (+669.6 %).

Accommodation sales 4.6 million euro

Total accommodation sales in August were 4.6 million euro (+402,000). The share of Airbnb and Vrbo was 22.0 percent. Therefore, registered accommodation sales were 3.6 million euro (+228,000) and non-registered sales 1.0 million euro (+174,000).

Total January-August sales were 27.8 million euro and they increased 1.1 million euro from the previous year.
