North Karelia: Tourism in a nutshell
Registered bed nights increased 14 percent (February)
In February 2020, 34,700 bed nights were recorded in North Karelia (+13.7 %), of which 30,900 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 3,800 nights by foreigners. Domestic bed nights increased 15 percent and foreign bed nights increased one percent. In total, bed nights increased 14 percent from last year's February.
Most foreign bed nights were recorded for travelers from Russia (1,200 nights).
25,200 nights (+27.9 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 9,500 nights (-12.3 %) by business visitors.
Between January and February, 50,800 bed nights (+11.1 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 10,500 (-2.6 %) for foreigners in North Karelia, in total 61,200 (+8.5 %) nights.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

Market share 1.9 percent (February)
Total of 1.8 million bed nights (+7.2 %) were recorded in the whole country, of which 1.2 million nights (+10.1 %) were spent by domestic visitors and 613,000 nights (+1.9 %) by foreigners.
The market share of North Karelia out of total bed nights was 1.9 % (+0.1 percentage points), out of domestic bed nights 2.5 % and foreign bed nights 0.6 %.

19,800 tourists arrived to accommodation (February)
Arrivals to registered accommodation increased 12 percent compared to earlier year. Of all arrivals, 90.7 percent were domestic, and 9.3 percent were from foreign countries.
During February, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in North Karelia on average 1.7 nights (+0.04) and foreigners 2.1 nights (-0.05).
2,500 air travelers (Joensuu)
The airport received a total of 2,500 passengers, which means air passenger arrivals decreased 56 percent.
Of local passengers, 10.8 % arrived from abroad, thus the share of domestic passengers was 89.2 %.
In addition, there were 2,100 passengers departing the airport (-62.9 %), therefore the total number of trips via the airport was 4,600.

Trips by Russian travelers over the eastern border increased 24 percent (February)
A total of 255,000 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.

Russian visa applications increased 29 percent (February)
There was a total of 51,600 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 83.4 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Accommodation sales 2.1 million euro (February)
Registered accommodation sales in February were 2.1 million euro (+191,000).
Registered January-February sales were 3.6 million euro and they increased 185,000 euro from the previous year.
