North Karelia: Tourism in a nutshell
37,600 registered bed nights
In September 2020, 37,600 bed nights were recorded in North Karelia (-7.9 %), of which 36,800 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 790 nights by foreigners. Domestic bed nights increased three percent and foreign bed nights decreased 84 percent. In total, bed nights decreased eight percent from last year's September.
Most foreign bed nights were recorded for travelers from Germany (162 nights).
28,400 nights (+12.0 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 9,300 nights (-40.4 %) by business visitors.
Between January and September, 297,000 bed nights (-17.2 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 23,700 (-60.0 %) for foreigners in North Karelia, in total 321,000 (-23.3 %) nights.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

21,800 tourists arrived to accommodation
Arrivals to registered accommodation decreased five percent compared to earlier year. Of all arrivals, 98.2 percent were domestic, and 1.8 percent were from foreign countries.
During September, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in North Karelia on average 1.7 nights (-0.01) and foreigners 2.0 nights (-0.21).

23,800 Russian travelers via eastern border
A total of 23,800 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.

Russian visa applications decreased 99 percent
There was a total of 610 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 60.7 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Foreign visitors and their consumption
The number of foreign visitors in September was 2,700 (-82.5 %). Out of them 1,200 were on a daytrip and 1,400 stayed at least for one night.
The cumulative number of foreign visitors between January and September was 115,000 (-57.0 %).
Total consumption of these visitors in North Karelia in September was 290,000 euro (109 per visitor). Overnight visitors spent 229,000 euro and day visitors 60,300 euro. Between January and September the consumption was 9.9 million euro.

Accommodation sales 2.1 million euro
Registered accommodation sales in September were 2.1 million euro (-381,000).
Registered January-September sales were 15.4 million euro and they decreased 4.9 million euro from the previous year.
