North Karelia: Tourism in a nutshell
Registered bed nights increased seven percent (November)
In November 2019, 28,400 bed nights were recorded in North Karelia (+7.3 %), of which 24,100 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 4,400 nights by foreigners. Domestic bed nights increased eight percent and foreign bed nights increased four percent. In total, bed nights increased seven percent from last year's November.
Between January and November, 413,000 bed nights (+9.6 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 67,600 (+0.1 %) for foreigners in North Karelia, in total 480,000 (+8.2 %) nights.
16,800 nights (+21.9 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 11,700 nights (-8.6 %) by business visitors.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

Total of 1.6 million bed nights (+4.9 %) were recorded in the whole country, of which 1.1 million nights (+5.5 %) were spent by domestic visitors and 453,000 nights (+3.4 %) by foreigners.
The market share of North Karelia out of total bed nights was 1.8 % (0.0 percentage points), out of domestic bed nights 2.2 % and foreign bed nights 1.0 %.

18,900 tourists arrived to accommodation (November)
Arrivals to registered accommodation increased eight percent compared to earlier year. Of all arrivals, 90.8 percent were domestic, and 9.2 percent were from foreign countries.
During November, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in North Karelia on average 1.4 nights (-0.01) and foreigners 2.5 nights (+0.11).
5,100 air travelers (November, Joensuu)
The airport received a total of 5,100 passengers, which means air passenger arrivals decreased six percent.
Of local passengers, 0.0 % arrived from abroad, thus the share of domestic passengers was 100.0 %.
In addition, there were 5,100 passengers departing the airport (-7.0 %), therefore the total number of trips via the airport was 10,200.

Trips by Russian travelers over the eastern border increased 14 percent (November)
A total of 320,000 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.
The share of southeastern border stations was 82.3 percent.

Russian visa applications decreased six percent (November)
There was a total of 55,000 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 76.9 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Accommodation sales 1.8 million euro (November)
Registered accommodation sales in November were 1.8 million euro (+98,300).
Registered January-November sales were 24.1 million euro and they increased 1.3 million euro from the previous year.
