North Karelia: Tourism in a nutshell
Registered accommodation. All changes are relative to the same period a year ago.
Registered bed nights increased three percent (August)
In August 2021, 61,700 registered bed nights were recorded in North Karelia (+3.0 %), of which 57,500 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 4,200 nights by foreigners. Registered domestic bed nights increased two percent and registered foreign bed nights increased 27 percent. In total, registered bed nights increased three percent from last year's August.
50,300 nights (-0.5 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 11,400 nights (+21.3 %) by business visitors.
Between January and August, 315,000 registered bed nights (+14.7 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 10,100 (-57.0 %) for foreigners in North Karelia, in total 325,000 (+9.1 %) registered nights.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

32,500 tourists arrived to registered accommodation (August)
Arrivals to registered accommodation decreased four percent compared to earlier year. Of all registered arrivals, 94.7 percent were domestic, and 5.3 percent were from foreign countries.
During August, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in North Karelia on average 1.9 nights (+0.13) and foreigners 2.4 nights (-0.4).
630 air travelers (Joensuu)
The airport received a total of 630 passengers.
Of local passengers, 0.6 % arrived from abroad, thus the share of domestic passengers was 99.4 %.
In addition, there were 720 passengers departing the airport, therefore the total number of trips via the airport was 1,300.

Trips by Russian travelers over the eastern border increased 40 percent
A total of 33,400 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.

Russian visa applications increased 290 percent (August)
There was a total of 2,500 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 56.7 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Foreign visitors and their consumption (August)
The number of foreign visitors in August was 11,700 (+47.5 %). Out of them 5,700 were on a daytrip and 6,100 stayed at least for one night.
The cumulative number of foreign visitors between January and August was 34,100 (-70.2 %).
Total consumption of these visitors in North Karelia in August was 1.2 million euro (107 per visitor). Overnight visitors spent 971,000 euro and day visitors 278,000 euro. Between January and August the consumption was 3.3 million euro.
