North Karelia: Tourism in a nutshell
Registered accommodation. All changes are relative to the same period a year ago.
Registered bed nights increased 40 percent
In June 2021, 59,100 registered bed nights were recorded in North Karelia (+40.1 %), of which 58,100 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 980 nights by foreigners. Registered domestic bed nights increased 40 percent and registered foreign bed nights increased 59 percent. In total, registered bed nights increased 40 percent from last year's June.
Most foreign registered bed nights were recorded for travelers from Austria (200 nights).
49,400 nights (+38.6 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 9,800 nights (+48.2 %) by business visitors.
Between January and June, 158,000 registered bed nights (+29.9 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 3,300 (-81.3 %) for foreigners in North Karelia, in total 162,000 (+15.9 %) registered nights.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

32,000 tourists arrived to registered accommodation
Arrivals to registered accommodation increased 46 percent compared to earlier year. Of all registered arrivals, 98.7 percent were domestic, and 1.3 percent were from foreign countries.
During June, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in North Karelia on average 1.8 nights (-0.07) and foreigners 2.3 nights (-1.1).
260 air travelers (Joensuu)
The airport received a total of 260 passengers.
Of local passengers, 6.2 % arrived from abroad, thus the share of domestic passengers was 93.8 %.
In addition, there were 230 passengers departing the airport, therefore the total number of trips via the airport was 490.

Trips by Russian travelers over the eastern border increased 43 percent
A total of 29,000 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.
The share of southeastern border stations was 69.4 percent.

Russian visa applications increased 370 percent
There was a total of 2,800 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 55.1 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Foreign visitors and their consumption
The number of foreign visitors in June was 2,800 (+134.1 %). Out of them 1,500 were on a daytrip and 1,300 stayed at least for one night.
The cumulative number of foreign visitors between January and June was 15,300 (-84.9 %).
Total consumption of these visitors in North Karelia in June was 287,000 euro (101 per visitor). Overnight visitors spent 213,000 euro and day visitors 74,400 euro. Between January and June the consumption was 1.3 million euro.

Accommodation sales 3.6 million euro
Total accommodation sales in June were 3.6 million euro (+576,000). The share of Airbnb and Vrbo was 26.3 percent. Therefore, registered accommodation sales were 2.7 million euro (+1.1 million) and non-registered sales 953,000 euro (-510,000).
Total January-June sales were 13.0 million euro and they decreased 1.7 million euro from the previous year.
