North Karelia: Tourism in a nutshell
Registered bed nights increased four percent
In February 2019, 30,600 bed nights were recorded in North Karelia (+3.8 %), of which 26,800 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 3,800 nights by foreigners. Domestic bed nights increased four percent and foreign bed nights increased one percent. In total, bed nights increased four percent from last year's February.
Most foreign bed nights were recorded for travelers from Russia (810 nights).
19,700 nights (+3.6 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 10,800 nights (+4.0 %) by business visitors.
Between January and February, 45,700 bed nights (+1.7 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 10,700 (+6.1 %) for foreigners in North Karelia, in total 56,400 (+2.5 %) nights.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

Market share 1.8 percent
Total of 1.7 million bed nights (+2.0 %) were recorded in the whole country, of which 1.1 million nights (+2.8 %) were spent by domestic visitors and 601,000 nights (+0.4 %) by foreigners.
The market share of North Karelia out of total bed nights was 1.8 % (0.0 percentage points), out of domestic bed nights 2.4 % and foreign bed nights 0.6 %.

17,700 tourists arrived to accommodation
Arrivals to registered accommodation increased four percent compared to earlier year. Of all arrivals, 90.1 percent were domestic, and 9.9 percent were from foreign countries.
During February, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in North Karelia on average 1.7 nights (-0.02) and foreigners 2.1 nights (+0.09).
4,600 air travelers (Joensuu)
The airport received a total of 4,600 passengers, which means air passenger arrivals decreased one percent.
Of local passengers, 0.7 % arrived from abroad, thus the share of domestic passengers was 99.3 %.
In addition, there were 4,500 passengers departing the airport (+3.3 %), therefore the total number of trips via the airport was 9,000.

205,000 Russian travelers via eastern border
A total of 205,000 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.
The share of southeastern border stations was 82.1 percent.

Russian visa applications decreased 11 percent
There was a total of 40,000 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 82.7 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Accommodation sales 1.9 million euro
Registered accommodation sales in February were 1.9 million euro (+173,000).
Registered January-February sales were 3.4 million euro and they increased 220,000 euro from the previous year.
