North Karelia: Tourism in a nutshell
Registered bed nights increased five percent
In September 2019, 40,800 bed nights were recorded in North Karelia (+4.7 %), of which 35,800 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 5,000 nights by foreigners. Domestic bed nights increased 10 percent and foreign bed nights decreased 21 percent. In total, bed nights increased five percent from last year's September.
Most foreign bed nights were recorded for travelers from Russia (1,200 nights).
25,300 nights (-1.9 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 15,500 nights (+17.7 %) by business visitors.
Between January and September, 359,000 bed nights (+10.9 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 59,400 (-0.0 %) for foreigners in North Karelia, in total 418,000 (+9.2 %) nights.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

23,000 tourists arrived to accommodation
Arrivals to registered accommodation increased three percent compared to earlier year. Of all arrivals, 90.1 percent were domestic, and 9.9 percent were from foreign countries.
During September, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in North Karelia on average 1.7 nights (+0.1) and foreigners 2.2 nights (-0.63).
6,200 air travelers (Joensuu)
The airport received a total of 6,200 passengers, which means air passenger arrivals increased four percent.
Of local passengers, 17.1 % arrived from abroad, thus the share of domestic passengers was 82.9 %.
In addition, there were 6,900 passengers departing the airport (+11.6 %), therefore the total number of trips via the airport was 13,100 (+7.7 %).

Trips by Russian travelers over the eastern border increased six percent
A total of 251,000 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.
The share of southeastern border stations was 91.4 percent.

Russian visa applications increased 82 percent
There was a total of 69,800 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 87.9 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Accommodation sales 2.5 million euro
Registered accommodation sales in September were 2.5 million euro (+445,000).
Registered January-September sales were 20.3 million euro and they increased 1.1 million euro from the previous year.
