North Karelia: Tourism in a nutshell
Registered bed nights increased two percent
In January 2020, 26,500 bed nights were recorded in North Karelia (+2.4 %), of which 19,900 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 6,600 nights by foreigners. Domestic bed nights increased five percent and foreign bed nights decreased five percent. In total, bed nights increased two percent from last year's January.
Most foreign bed nights were recorded for travelers from Russia (5,000 nights).
16,900 nights (+10.8 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 9,600 nights (-9.5 %) by business visitors.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

Market share 1.6 percent
Total of 1.7 million bed nights (+8.3 %) were recorded in the whole country, of which 954,000 nights (+10.5 %) were spent by domestic visitors and 712,000 nights (+5.5 %) by foreigners.
The market share of North Karelia out of total bed nights was 1.6 % (-0.1 percentage points), out of domestic bed nights 2.1 % and foreign bed nights 0.9 %.

16,400 tourists arrived to accommodation
Arrivals to registered accommodation increased 11 percent compared to earlier year. Of all arrivals, 78.7 percent were domestic, and 21.3 percent were from foreign countries.
During January, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in North Karelia on average 1.5 nights (-0.1) and foreigners 1.9 nights (-0.22).
3,800 air travelers (Joensuu)
The airport received a total of 3,800 passengers, which means air passenger arrivals decreased 10 percent.
Of local passengers, 0.2 % arrived from abroad, thus the share of domestic passengers was 99.8 %.
In addition, there were 4,100 passengers departing the airport (-7.5 %), therefore the total number of trips via the airport was 8,000.

Trips by Russian travelers over the eastern border increased 11 percent
A total of 291,000 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.

There was a total of 37,100 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 81.1 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.

Registered accommodation sales in January were 1.5 million euro (-6,600).
