North Karelia: Tourism in a nutshell
56,300 registered bed nights
In August 2020, 56,300 bed nights were recorded in North Karelia (-9.3 %), of which 53,200 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 3,100 nights by foreigners. Domestic bed nights increased seven percent and foreign bed nights decreased 75 percent. In total, bed nights decreased nine percent from last year's August.
Most foreign bed nights were recorded for travelers from Germany (1,600 nights).
47,100 nights (-2.6 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 9,200 nights (-32.7 %) by business visitors.
Between January and August, 260,000 bed nights (-19.4 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 22,900 (-58.0 %) for foreigners in North Karelia, in total 283,000 (-25.0 %) nights.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

31,500 tourists arrived to accommodation
Arrivals to registered accommodation decreased eight percent compared to earlier year. Of all arrivals, 96.5 percent were domestic, and 3.5 percent were from foreign countries.
During August, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in North Karelia on average 1.7 nights (+0.07) and foreigners 2.8 nights (+0.16).

24,600 Russian travelers via eastern border
A total of 24,600 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.

There was a total of 51,600 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 83.4 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Accommodation sales 2.6 million euro
Registered accommodation sales in August were 2.6 million euro (-222,000).
Registered January-August sales were 13.4 million euro and they decreased 4.5 million euro from the previous year.
