Saimaa Region: Tourism in a nutshell
Registered accommodation. All changes are relative to the same period a year ago.
125,000 bed nights in paid accommodation
Total of 125,000 bed nights (+16.8 %) were recorded in paid accommodation in Saimaa Region in May 2022. This figure includes bed nights at registered establishments as well as at AirBnB and Vrbo. The share of registered bed nights was 70 % and non-registered 30 %.
Between January and May, the number of paid bed nights was 518,000 (+22.4 %). Share of registered was 73 % and non-registered 27 %.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded. Non-registered bed nights statistics include bed nights from AirBnB and Vrbo.
Registered bed nights increased 39 percent
In May 2022, 87,000 registered bed nights were recorded in Saimaa Region (+39.2 %), of which 81,500 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 5,500 nights by foreigners. Registered domestic bed nights increased 34 percent and registered foreign bed nights increased 250 percent. In total, registered bed nights increased 39 percent from last year's May.
Most foreign registered bed nights were recorded for travelers from Germany (770 nights).
53,200 nights (+43.8 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 33,800 nights (+32.6 %) by business visitors.
Between January and May, 362,000 registered bed nights (+44.5 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 18,900 (+220.0 %) for foreigners in Saimaa Region, in total 380,000 (+48.6 %) registered nights.

46,900 tourists arrived to registered accommodation
Arrivals to registered accommodation increased 44 percent compared to earlier year. Of all registered arrivals, 95.5 percent were domestic, and 4.5 percent were from foreign countries.
During May, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in Saimaa Region on average 1.8 nights (-0.08) and foreigners 2.6 nights (+0.0).

Trips by Russian travelers over the eastern border increased 36 percent
A total of 32,800 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.
The share of southeastern border stations was 76.2 percent.

Accommodation sales 6.6 million euro
Total accommodation sales in May were 6.6 million euro (+1.7 million). The share of Airbnb and Vrbo was 20.9 percent. Therefore, registered accommodation sales were 5.2 million euro (+2.0 million) and non-registered sales 1.4 million euro (-344,000).
Total January-May sales were 24.5 million euro and they increased 5.6 million euro from the previous year.
