Saimaa Region: Tourism in a nutshell
Registered bed nights increased one percent
In August 2019, 186,000 bed nights were recorded in Saimaa Region (+0.9 %), of which 120,000 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 65,600 nights by foreigners. Domestic bed nights increased one percent and foreign bed nights increased less than one percent. In total, bed nights increased one percent from last year's August.
Most foreign bed nights were recorded for travelers from Russia (36,600 nights).
150,000 nights (-0.3 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 36,100 nights (+6.3 %) by business visitors.
Between January and August, 767,000 bed nights (+4.8 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 290,000 (-1.3 %) for foreigners in Saimaa Region, in total 1.1 million (+3.1 %) nights.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

95,900 tourists arrived to accommodation
Arrivals to registered accommodation decreased one percent compared to earlier year. Of all arrivals, 72.7 percent were domestic, and 27.3 percent were from foreign countries.
During August, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in Saimaa Region on average 1.7 nights (+0.03) and foreigners 2.5 nights (+0.03).

Trips by Russian travelers over the eastern border increased 13 percent
A total of 348,000 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.
The share of southeastern border stations was 92.3 percent.

Russian visa applications increased 45 percent
There was a total of 90,700 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 84.3 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Accommodation sales 8.1 million euro
Registered accommodation sales in August were 8.1 million euro (+670,000).
Registered January-August sales were 48.1 million euro and they increased 5.2 million euro from the previous year.
