Saimaa Region: Tourism in a nutshell
Registered bed nights increased one percent
In January 2019, 83,300 bed nights were recorded in Saimaa Region (+0.9 %), of which 47,800 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 35,500 nights by foreigners. Domestic bed nights increased 10 percent and foreign bed nights decreased nine percent. In total, bed nights increased one percent from last year's January.
57,000 nights (-10.1 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 26,300 nights (+37.1 %) by business visitors.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

Market share 5.4 percent
Total of 1.5 million bed nights (+1.1 %) were recorded in the whole country, of which 869,000 nights (+1.5 %) were spent by domestic visitors and 675,000 nights (+0.5 %) by foreigners.
The market share of Saimaa Region out of total bed nights was 5.4 % (-0.0 percentage points), out of domestic bed nights 5.5 % and foreign bed nights 5.3 %.
40,800 tourists arrived to accommodation
Arrivals to registered accommodation decreased six percent compared to earlier year. Of all arrivals, 66.3 percent were domestic, and 33.7 percent were from foreign countries.
During January, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in Saimaa Region on average 1.8 nights (+0.22) and foreigners 2.6 nights (+0.02).

262,000 Russian travelers via eastern border
A total of 262,000 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.
The share of southeastern border stations was 80.1 percent.

There was a total of 34,000 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 82.2 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.

Registered accommodation sales in January were 4.1 million euro (+193,000).
