South Karelia: Tourism in a nutshell
19,800 registered bed nights
In January 2021, 19,800 bed nights were recorded in South Karelia (-60.3 %), of which 19,200 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 570 nights by foreigners. Domestic bed nights decreased 13 percent and foreign bed nights decreased 98 percent. In total, bed nights decreased 60 percent from last year's January.
15,400 nights (-59.7 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 4,400 nights (-62.5 %) by business visitors.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

9,700 tourists arrived to accommodation
Arrivals to registered accommodation decreased 63 percent compared to earlier year. Of all arrivals, 98.4 percent were domestic, and 1.6 percent were from foreign countries.
During January, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in South Karelia on average 2.0 nights (+0.37) and foreigners 3.7 nights (+1.6).

23,500 Russian travelers via eastern border
A total of 23,500 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.

Russian visa applications decreased 99 percent
There was a total of 420 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 51.9 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Foreign visitors and their consumption
The number of foreign visitors in January was 1,900 (-98.8 %). Out of them 1,600 were on a daytrip and 310 stayed at least for one night.
Total consumption of these visitors in South Karelia in January was 308,000 euro (165 per visitor). Overnight visitors spent 62,700 euro and day visitors 245,000 euro.
