South Karelia: Tourism in a nutshell
54,200 registered bed nights (October)
In October 2020, 54,200 bed nights were recorded in South Karelia (-16.3 %), of which 51,600 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 2,600 nights by foreigners. Domestic bed nights increased nine percent and foreign bed nights decreased 85 percent. In total, bed nights decreased 16 percent from last year's October.
Most foreign bed nights were recorded for travelers from United States (350 nights).
41,200 nights (-18.4 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 12,900 nights (-9.1 %) by business visitors.
Between January and October, 393,000 bed nights (-13.6 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 62,400 (-69.1 %) for foreigners in South Karelia, in total 455,000 (-30.7 %) nights.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

24,600 tourists arrived to accommodation (October)
Arrivals to registered accommodation decreased 30 percent compared to earlier year. Of all arrivals, 96.7 percent were domestic, and 3.3 percent were from foreign countries.
During October, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in South Karelia on average 2.2 nights (+0.27) and foreigners 3.2 nights (+1.5).

A total of 25,600 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.

There was a total of 900 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 51.5 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Foreign visitors and their consumption (October)
The number of foreign visitors in October was 15,700 (-92.1 %). Out of them 13,700 were on a daytrip and 2,000 stayed at least for one night.
The cumulative number of foreign visitors between January and October was 450,000 (-64.6 %).
Total consumption of these visitors in South Karelia in October was 2.6 million euro (163 per visitor). Overnight visitors spent 402,000 euro and day visitors 2.2 million euro. Between January and October the consumption was 73.6 million euro.
