South Karelia: Tourism in a nutshell
Registered accommodation. All changes are relative to the same period a year ago.
53,500 bed nights in paid accommodation
Total of 53,500 bed nights (+68.5 %) were recorded in paid accommodation in South Karelia in May 2022. This figure includes bed nights at registered establishments as well as at AirBnB and Vrbo. The share of registered bed nights was 82 % and non-registered 18 %.
Between January and May, the number of paid bed nights was 222,000 (+61.7 %). Share of registered was 86 % and non-registered 14 %.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded. Non-registered bed nights statistics include bed nights from AirBnB and Vrbo.
Registered bed nights increased 76 percent
In May 2022, 44,100 registered bed nights were recorded in South Karelia (+76.0 %), of which 41,100 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 3,000 nights by foreigners. Registered domestic bed nights increased 69 percent and registered foreign bed nights increased 330 percent. In total, registered bed nights increased 76 percent from last year's May.
Most foreign registered bed nights were recorded for travelers from Estonia (330 nights).
26,700 nights (+54.8 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 17,400 nights (+122.8 %) by business visitors.
Between January and May, 182,000 registered bed nights (+70.9 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 10,100 (+214.9 %) for foreigners in South Karelia, in total 192,000 (+75.2 %) registered nights.

21,200 tourists arrived to registered accommodation
Arrivals to registered accommodation increased 74 percent compared to earlier year. Of all registered arrivals, 94.9 percent were domestic, and 5.1 percent were from foreign countries.
During May, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in South Karelia on average 2.0 nights (-0.01) and foreigners 2.7 nights (+0.67).

The airport received a total of 1,400 passengers.
Of local passengers, 0.0 % arrived from abroad, thus the share of domestic passengers was 0.0 %.
In addition, there were 1,300 passengers departing the airport, therefore the total number of trips via the airport was 2,700.

Trips by Russian travelers over the eastern border increased 36 percent
A total of 32,800 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.
The share of southeastern border stations was 76.2 percent.

Accommodation sales 2.9 million euro
Total accommodation sales in May were 2.9 million euro (+1.4 million). The share of Airbnb and Vrbo was 11.1 percent. Therefore, registered accommodation sales were 2.6 million euro (+1.3 million) and non-registered sales 328,000 euro (+30,600).
Total January-May sales were 10.8 million euro and they increased 4.2 million euro from the previous year.
