South Karelia: Tourism in a nutshell
Registered accommodation. All changes are relative to the same period a year ago.
Registered bed nights increased 119 percent (March)
In March 2022, 41,700 registered bed nights were recorded in South Karelia (+118.6 %), of which 39,600 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 2,100 nights by foreigners. Registered domestic bed nights increased 113 percent and registered foreign bed nights increased 380 percent. In total, registered bed nights increased 119 percent from last year's March.
Most foreign registered bed nights were recorded for travelers from Germany (310 nights).
32,000 nights (+144.4 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 9,700 nights (+62.2 %) by business visitors.
Between January and March, 99,400 registered bed nights (+45.7 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 4,900 (+166.3 %) for foreigners in South Karelia, in total 104,000 (+48.9 %) registered nights.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

20,300 tourists arrived to registered accommodation (March)
Arrivals to registered accommodation increased 150 percent compared to earlier year. Of all registered arrivals, 94.9 percent were domestic, and 5.1 percent were from foreign countries.
During March, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in South Karelia on average 2.1 nights (-0.28) and foreigners 2.0 nights (-1.6).

Trips by Russian travelers over the eastern border increased 19 percent
A total of 31,300 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.
The share of southeastern border stations was 75.5 percent.

There was a total of 7,500 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 82.4 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
