South Karelia: Tourism in a nutshell
19,500 registered bed nights (March)
In March 2021, 19,500 bed nights were recorded in South Karelia (-22.0 %), of which 19,100 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 440 nights by foreigners. Domestic bed nights increased four percent and foreign bed nights decreased 93 percent. In total, bed nights decreased 22 percent from last year's March.
Most foreign bed nights were recorded for travelers from Netherlands (132 nights).
13,100 nights (-29.3 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 6,400 nights (-1.4 %) by business visitors.
Between January and March, 68,600 bed nights (-13.3 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 1,800 (-96.2 %) for foreigners in South Karelia, in total 70,500 (-45.1 %) nights.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

8,400 tourists arrived to accommodation (March)
Arrivals to registered accommodation decreased 36 percent compared to earlier year. Of all arrivals, 98.5 percent were domestic, and 1.5 percent were from foreign countries.
During March, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in South Karelia on average 2.3 nights (+0.33) and foreigners 3.6 nights (+1.8).

26,800 Russian travelers via eastern border (March)
A total of 26,800 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.

There was a total of 1,100 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 38.5 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Foreign visitors and their consumption (March)
The number of foreign visitors in March was 2,400 (-96.6 %). Out of them 2,200 were on a daytrip and 260 stayed at least for one night.
The cumulative number of foreign visitors between January and March was 8,600 (-97.9 %).
Total consumption of these visitors in South Karelia in March was 391,000 euro (162 per visitor). Overnight visitors spent 51,900 euro and day visitors 339,000 euro. Between January and March the consumption was 1.4 million euro.
