South Karelia: Tourism in a nutshell
Registered accommodation. All changes are relative to the same period a year ago.
Registered bed nights increased seven percent (August)
In August 2021, 61,800 registered bed nights were recorded in South Karelia (+7.2 %), of which 59,000 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 2,700 nights by foreigners. Registered domestic bed nights increased 11 percent and registered foreign bed nights decreased 41 percent. In total, registered bed nights increased seven percent from last year's August.
50,200 nights (+9.2 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 11,500 nights (-0.8 %) by business visitors.
Between January and August, 341,000 registered bed nights (+13.5 %) were recorded for domestic visitors and 10,600 (-81.3 %) for foreigners in South Karelia, in total 352,000 (-1.5 %) registered nights.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

32,600 tourists arrived to registered accommodation (August)
Arrivals to registered accommodation increased five percent compared to earlier year. Of all registered arrivals, 95.6 percent were domestic, and 4.4 percent were from foreign countries.
During August, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in South Karelia on average 1.9 nights (+0.08) and foreigners 1.9 nights (-0.7).
770 air travelers (August, Lappeenranta)
The airport received a total of 770 passengers, which means air passenger arrivals increased 27 percent.
In addition, there were 700 passengers departing the airport (+37.4 %), therefore the total number of trips via the airport was 1,500 (+32.0 %).

Trips by Russian travelers over the eastern border increased 40 percent
A total of 33,400 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.

Russian visa applications increased 290 percent (August)
There was a total of 2,500 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 56.7 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Foreign visitors and their consumption (August)
The number of foreign visitors in August was 12,700 (-19.7 %). Out of them 9,400 were on a daytrip and 3,200 stayed at least for one night.
The cumulative number of foreign visitors between January and August was 44,500 (-89.7 %).
Total consumption of these visitors in South Karelia in August was 2.1 million euro (169 per visitor). Overnight visitors spent 654,000 euro and day visitors 1.5 million euro. Between January and August the consumption was 7.4 million euro.
