South Karelia: Tourism in a nutshell
Registered bed nights increased four percent
In January 2020, 49,700 bed nights were recorded in South Karelia (+3.6 %), of which 21,800 nights were spent by domestic visitors and 27,800 nights by foreigners. Domestic bed nights decreased nine percent and foreign bed nights increased 17 percent. In total, bed nights increased four percent from last year's January.
Most foreign bed nights were recorded for travelers from Russia (26,200 nights).
37,900 nights (+3.9 %) were spend by leisure visitors and 11,700 nights (+2.7 %) by business visitors.
Registered bed nights statistics include stats for registered accommodations: hotels, motels, guest houses, hostels, holiday villages and campsites. Establishments with fewer than 20 beds or caravan lots with an electrical connection point are excluded.

Market share 3.0 percent
Total of 1.7 million bed nights (+8.3 %) were recorded in the whole country, of which 954,000 nights (+10.5 %) were spent by domestic visitors and 712,000 nights (+5.5 %) by foreigners.
The market share of South Karelia out of total bed nights was 3.0 % (-0.1 percentage points), out of domestic bed nights 2.3 % and foreign bed nights 3.9 %.
26,400 tourists arrived to accommodation
Arrivals to registered accommodation increased 10 percent compared to earlier year. Of all arrivals, 50.5 percent were domestic, and 49.5 percent were from foreign countries.
During January, domestic visitors stayed in registered accommodation in South Karelia on average 1.6 nights (-0.12) and foreigners 2.1 nights (-0.2).

Trips by Russian travelers over the eastern border increased 11 percent
A total of 291,000 Russians arrived in Finland over the eastern border crossings.

There was a total of 37,100 visa applications to Finland made by the Russians. 81.1 percent were done at St. Petersburg's consulate.
Accommodation sales 3.0 million euro
Total accommodation sales in January were 3.0 million euro (+181,000). The share of Airbnb and HomeAway was 15.2 percent. Therefore, registered accommodation sales were 2.6 million euro (+36,400) and Airbnb and HomeAway sales 393,000 euro (+145,000).
